Not expecting

This sweater is mighty cottonish for a cashmere one, but let’s not let that bother us.  Maybe this is the cheap, wrong-side-of-the-tracks version.  ;) No matter- spring is almost here and I’ve got great hopes that the coming summer will be a warm one, too warm for any baby to wear all wool. Fingers crossed, my cotton sweater (and the wee beanie there) will come in handy.

Olen tässä tilaillut sellaista kesäsäätä, että puuvillalla (ja bambulla, toim. huom.) pitäisi pärjätä. En kylläkään ajatellut tässä lisääntyä lähiaikoina, joten tämä menee lahjaksi. Neuloin pitkästä aikaa puuvillaa, pistelin menemään jopa Earth hourin aikaan kynttilänvalossa. Hullun työtä täytyy sanoa- silmäsärky oli lopputulos. :)

I’m not sure how practical the cords in the back are. I was really wanting to replace them with a teeny weeny button, but in the end I just went with the flow. The cords are the same length by the way. That picture is a blatant liar.

Mallissa oli käytetty silkkinauhoja takaosan halkiossa, joten minä perässä (vaikka mieli teki pikkuruista nappia). Käytettyvyystutkimuksia ei ole suoritettu, mutta haittanneeko tuo. Ja saapihan halkion jättää vaikka auki, kyllä sitä ehtii myöhemminkin niskaa pakottaa.

Guinan

My pie hat. It was fun to make, I like the colors- yet it’s never seen the light of day. It just somehow doesn’t seem to fit.  It is fairly big by design and seems to really want to drop down to my eyes. I’m guessing I’ll give this one away as soon as I find a proper big-headed (hehe) recipient, or, I may keep it for the times when I’m sporting a really big beehive hairdo in the wintertime. Which is uhh never.

Tätä pannukakkulätsää oli kyllä kiva tehdä, mutta kertaakaan se ei vielä ole päässyt ulkoilemaan. Se on hiukka isohko, mutta sellainenhan siitä mallin mukaan pitikin tulla.  Mutta kun se tuppaa valumaan silmille eikä muutenkaan jotenkin istu meikäläisen nupille niin on sitten aina jäänyt hattuhyllylle.

Värityksestä kyllä tykkään paljon.

Of stitching

Cross stitching is beginning to find its place amongst my routines. I wouldn’t say it’s replacing knitting, not at all, but oftentimes I take up stitching late in the evening when I’m wanting to stay fairly still. You can accomplish a lot with just little movements. Little gifts like this Valentine’s present for a co-worker don’t take weeks and weeks to complete (or at least this one didn’t.) I wish I was that effiient more often.

Ristipistoja on mukava tehdä iltasella, sohvalla istuskellen, silloin kun ei huvita ylenmääräisesti liikutella käsiään tai nostella painavaa neuletta. Ja mikä parasta, valmista voipi tulla nopiaankin. Tämä tulppaani lähti maailmalle ystävänpäivänä. Tausta nyt ei näy, mutta se on puna-valko ruudullista kangasta.

But not everything has to be finished quickly. I’m beginning to believe some patterns are meant to be savoured. I didn’t have to browse  cross stitch patterns for long to find that Little house needleworks is what rocks my world. I like the clear designs, nothing overly fussy, and the earth-tone colors. Most of all I like the themes, and the obvious respect for all things past that reverbarates from them.

That I would get The Bookshelf as my first LHN design was like written in the stars. No way around it. I’ve been working on this on and off for like 6 months now and I’m about 1/3 done. I’m in no rush to finish though. I can  totally see The Bookshelf hanging on the walls of all my future apartments (which will be plentiful if the past is anything to go by).

Suosikikseni ristipistomalleista on ehdottomasti sanottava Little house needleworksin mallit. Ne ovat selkeitä ja teemat minulle mieleisiä. Värit  ovat rauhallisia eivätkä kilpaile silmän huomiosta. Ensimmäinen LHN mallini oli The Bookshelf- ja meikäläiselle luonnollinen valinta, ei kahta sanaa. Joulun aikaan lahjoin itseni ähkyyn uusilla malleilla. Teen ne ‘sitten joskus’. Nyt nautin tästä.

Spring set

Today I heard the loud thuds of snow falling off the roof onto the windowsill. To me, that is one of the first signs of spring, even though we may still have to trample in snow for a few more months. ~ I’ve gotten tired of all my scarves and hats. More! I need more!

Tänään lunta jo putoili katolta ikkunalaudoille. Aina yhtä riemastuttavaa huomata että aurinko alkaa jo lämmittämään, vaikkakin vain vähän. On tässä vielä talvea jäljellä, siksipä vaihtelun vuoksi tein uuden setin. Vaihtelua ei tosin edelleenkään tullut värimaailmaan- hyvin näyttää tummanpunaiselta minun maailmani!

Backing up a month or so

Joulu tuntuu jo todella kaukaiselta, mutta tässä vielä katse taaksepäin. En tänä jouluna neulonut kenellekään mitään. Inspiraation siivittämänä vain pistelin.

It seems as though such long time has passed since Christmas. Here’ a look back at the only handmade presents I gave this Christmas. I wanted  picture with all of them in it, unfortunately that wasn’t possible. I didn’t do any present knitting this year. I was really inspired to stitch instead.

Yhteiskuvasta puuttuu Holly berries biscornu, joka valmistuikin ihan viime hetkellä ennen luovutusta. Päällimmäisenä on Vivian Balesin malli Catch a falling flake (The Gift of Stitching December 2006) ja taaimmaisena  aivan piskuinen Noel-malli on osa Windy Willows‘in sivuilla oleva ilmaismallia plus omasta päästä tehnyt kirjaimet. Debbie Draper from The Gift of Stitching, November 2007. Ensimmäinen kolmioviimeistely, mutta se menee uusiksi lähinnä siksi että tuolta puuttuu yksi hiivatin punainen piste! Huomasin sen vasta viimeistelyjen ja kuvan ottamisen jälkeen. Tämä siis jäi minulle kuusenkoristeeksi.

Löysin tämän mallin läppärin uumenista ilman mitään taustatietoja. Yritin äsken googlettaakin, mutta mitään ei löytynyt. Tähän hätään voin siis vain sanoa, että malli ei ole minun ja ken tietää alkuperän, voi heittää kommenttia.

Joyeux noel- ilmaismalli Les grilles du Maryse‘n sivuilta. Kokeilin ensimmäisen kerran helmien kera ja tykästyin tosissani.

Red knee-highs

I started my first pair of knee highs a couple of winters ago. The second sock is still half missing from that pair. These ones I made in just a couple of days. They’re nothing special, just your average knee-highs.

But look my Tretorns! Comfy, snug and warm. I’m beginning to think rubber boots are highly underestimated.

Aloittelin ensimmäisiä polvisukkiani muutama talvi sitten. Niistä puuttuu vielä toisesta sukasta puolet. Nämä sen sijaan valmistuivat ihan muutamassa illassa. Ihan sitä peruskauraa ovat, ei mitään hienouksia. Kuvassa mukana myös uus-landelaisen uudet parhaat kaverit, vuorelliset Tretornit.

Kotiliedessä olleella ohjeella tein myös Sulottariksi nimetyt sukat, jotka muuttivat lämmittämään sukulaisten jalkoja niin nopeasti etten edes ehtinyt kuvata niitä. Olivat vähän kuin vanhat kunnon Jaywalkerit (Ravelry), tosin paksummalla langalla eikä kuvio ollut kuin etupuolella.

We got bucketloads of snow here over the past few days. Plowing not only the yard but also the road out of here- twice in one day and once the next day- was a ‘little’ nervewrecking. Last night we figured snow is our friend and got busy making these. Geometrical figures now rule the front yard.

Täällä Hämeenlinnassa on satanut lunta ihan kiitettävästi parina viime päivänä. On kolattu niin että kroppa tietää tehneensä jotain. Eilen illalla sitten iski inspis ja tuntia myöhemmin piha oli täynnä geometrisiä muotoja.

Ja seuraavaksi tuleekin sitten ristipistojuttuja. Hankintoja ja tekosia.

Socks galore

Can you tell I’ve been knitting some lately? Conwys were finished in July, Strawberry Field- socks plus the wee baby ones in August and the Egyptian socks yesterday. All in all, my toes have stayed warm thus far. What these 3 pairs have in common though is that they’re all faulty in one way or another. Conwys are just butt ugly (I’d like to know who gave the go-ahead to sell this colorway), Strawberry Field-socks are great, but the yarn is fairly stretchy so they’re too big. And the Egyptian socks…. well, I knit 2 rows too many to the edge. It’s clearly visible too, see the last picture.

Onhan täss neulottu mennen tullen. Conwyt heinäkuussa, SF:t elokussa ja egyptiläiset sain valmiiksi eilen. Kaikissa näissä pareissa on jotain vikaa- vaikka siis ihan käyttökelpoisia ovatkin. Conwyt ovat hurjan vinkelän väriset, SF:t ovat nyt jo repsahtaneet ja Egyptiläisten sukkien suulla on toisessa sukassa 2 kerrosta liikaa.

Mutta käytössä ovat silti!

I’d been wanting to knit the Lotus blossom tank for the longest time, and Ma’s birthday provided a good excuse to get to it. I used bamboo yarn for the first time in a bigger project, and it did feel really good to work with. Blocking was a bit frustrating, as the tank took like 3 days to dry.

Tässä menneen kesän satoa. Äidille synttärilahjaksi tehty Lotus blossom tank, joka valmistui kyllä yllättävän nopeasti vaikka sitä 3,75 puikoilla kilkuttelinkin. En nyt pääse käsiksi malliin että saisin tarkempia tietoja tähän, mutta tein toiseksi pienimmän koon mukaan. Kaula-aukosta tuli sen verran iso, että reunusta tehdessä tein aika reilusti 2 o yht- kavennuksia. Tykkään tosi paljon tuosta reunapitsistä. Jospa ensi kesäksi itsellekin saisi vastaavan? ;)

US Open Short-Sleeved Pullover / No pattern

I called this the US open pullover just because I knit it while watching Federer’s ass… sorry, ‘“tennis”. Initially I set out to make something for me, but this is as far as 300 grams of Red Heart Damaris would stretch. I can put it on too, but there’s nothing flattering about me wearing it. Trust me. I have pictures that will never see the light of day.

Tikuttelin tämän elokuussa tenniksen katsomisen lomassa. Red Heartin Damaris oli täysin uusi tuttavuus minulle- sitä ei muuten Ravelrystakaan löydy. Nappasin sitä mukaani paikallisesta käsityöliikkeestä kaikki mitä heillä oli tarjota. 300 grammalla päästiin näin pitkälle. Tarkoitushan oli siis tehdä tämä itselle -ja kyllähän se päälle menee- mutta esteettisistä syistä en usko sitä ikinä käyttäväni. ;) Äidille se sopii, joten käyttöön menee joka tapauksessa. Lanka on muuten ihanan pehmeää eikä mitenkään ylimuovisen tuntuistakaan. Tätä kun löytäisi lisää!

Seuraavassa postauksessa onkin sitten liuta pienempiä töitä.

Out of the ashes

Breeze anklets

A breeze to knit, just a couple of days in June. I especially loved making the heel. This is the 2nd pair I’ve made. And if you think I’ve been a lazy knitter even though I’ve not blogged in yonks, you’re oh so wrong. I’ve got a huge backlog of FOs here. I’d show them to you right now, but the unthinkable happened.

You know how you often read about your fellow bloggers’ cameras breaking down and about how devastated they are about it? You sympathize but it’s still something that happens to *them*, not to you. — Well, at least until it does happen to you.  Which is when, for the first time in months, you want to blog. You NEED to blog. NOW! So that is where we are right now. I’d love you to show you my finished Lotus blossom tank, but no can do. At least we’re back in business though, so no worries. I’ll be back like a bad rash. ;)

Breeze-sukkaset. Jälleen kivat tehdä, variaatiotakin löytyy. Lisäsin nilkkoihin ohutta kuminauhaa, muuten ne alkaisivat lörpöttää alta aikayksikön. Mandarin Petit sukkalankana on tuskin mikään kestävä vaihtoehto, mutta ei anneta sen häiritä. Lankaa meni vajaa kerä. Saaja tykkäsi, niin mikäs tässä ollessa.

Olen tässä kyllä tasaseen tahtiin neuloskellut menemään, esiteltävää olisi molemmille käsille. On kauluria ja sukkaa ja Lotus blossom tankia ja February Lady sweateria ja vaikka mitä. Että kassellaan taas.
